For a homemaker in the early 1900's her family was her world. Information to improve her family came slowly. In 1903 Home Demonstration was born bringing a "show and tell" experience especially to the rural communities. Various area called themselves Home Improvement Clubs, Home Bureaus, Tomato Clubs, Canning Clubs, or Homemaker Clubs.
The Agricultural College (MSU) entered into a cooperative agreement with the USDA making it possible for home and family education programs through demonstrations, training, and printed materials. Thus began the Michigan Home Demonstration Council in 1937.
In 1964 the name changed to Michigan Association of Extension Homemakers (MAEH).
In the early 1990's the state organization joined a National organization becoming the Michigan Association of Family & Community Education (MAFCE).
With advance technology in our lives and many women working outside the home creating a need to join the National Volunteer Outreach Network (NVON) in 2020. The nine states that are members continue to work together to promote communication, education, and volunteerism for all people. In Michigan we call ourselves Michigan Community Education Outreach (MCEO).
